Breaking: Kwankwaso, Abba Yusuf Move to APC as Peter Obi Heads to ADC

Nigeria’s political landscape may be heading for another dramatic reshuffle as fresh signals emerge from both the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In Kano State, a top government official has revealed that influential figures within the Kwankwasiyya political movement are considering a major defection. According to Abdullahi Rogo, Director-General of the Protocol Directorate at the Kano Government House, discussions held with the Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly and other key Kwankwasiyya stakeholders have produced a consensus leaning toward joining the APC.

Rogo disclosed that the agreement reached during the meeting favors the movement’s leader, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, as well as Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, aligning with the ruling party. While no formal announcement has been made, the revelation has intensified political speculation in the state, where Kwankwasiyya commands significant grassroots influence.

Meanwhile, another major political shift appears to be unfolding at the national level. Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, is reportedly on the verge of formally pitching his tent with the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Sources familiar with the development say Obi’s possible move follows weeks of consultations between him and leaders of the ADC. About three weeks ago, the party reportedly urged the former Anambra State governor to clearly state his position on joining its emerging coalition ahead of 2027.

It was gathered that Obi later met with the ADC’s National Chairman, David Mark, in what insiders describe as a decisive engagement aimed at reaffirming his commitment to the coalition project. Party sources suggest that the ADC’s ideological stance and internal positioning may have played a key role in influencing Obi’s reported decision.

The development follows a December 7 exchange between Obi and the ADC, after the party reacted to remarks attributed to him in which he allegedly questioned the party’s stability. At the time, ADC leaders publicly challenged the former presidential hopeful to either commit to the coalition or reconsider his involvement.

With both the APC and opposition blocs witnessing high-level negotiations and possible defections, analysts say the early maneuvers signal an intense build-up to the 2027 elections, where alliances and political calculations may once again redefine Nigeria’s power structure.
