The Islamic State’s West Africa Province (ISWAP) has issued a sharp response to recent threats made by former U.S. President Donald Trump. Trump had vowed to take decisive military action against jihadist groups if he returned to office, a remark that quickly drew international attention.
In a statement circulated through its usual propaganda channels, ISWAP dismissed Trump’s warning as “empty” and accused the former U.S. leader of seeking political capital by invoking the group’s name. The faction also asserted that it remains unfazed by any potential American military operations, claiming it is prepared to defend its territories and interests.
The group went further to caution the U.S. and its allies against renewed intervention in the Lake Chad Basin, warning that any foreign military campaign would escalate violence in the region. Analysts say the rhetoric mirrors ISWAP’s typical strategy of projecting strength while trying to assert relevance in global geopolitics.
Security experts also noted that the exchange is unfolding at a time when Nigeria and neighboring countries are intensifying efforts to contain extremist activity, raising concerns that heightened international tensions could complicate ongoing counter-terrorism operations.
